Nottingham’s Black History Month was celebrated at the St Ann’s Valley Centre on Wednesday when lots of locals joined in the activities.

Nottingham museum service put on a unique display of historical artefacts of shields, axes, masks and other memorabilia.

And local school children brought along their project work into Nottingham’s first black entrepreneur, George John Scipeo Africanus (1763 - 1834),  who started out as a slave in the Molineux household in Wolverhampton, and went on to run a successful servants business in the then town after being granted his freedom.

There was also a community choir, and Panya Banjoko read out some of their lovely poetry.

Video update: 29 October

This is the most recent video taken around the Stonebridge Park Estate, St Ann’s, Nottingham. All of the new roads and pavements have now been marked in blue in preparation for tarmac surfacing works which should begin this week. Magson Close road still needs some structural work at its junction with Stonebridge Road, while work is continuing on the adjacent flats.

Construction firm Lovell Partnerships Ltd are also doing work on Eastham Close footpath, installing two security gates, extending a 1.8m brick wall, and resurfacing the footpath itself. With two new street lights being installed along the footpath, I have advised them that this work needs to be carried out first prior the footpath works. Otherwise this path will be dug up later on to install the lighting columns & connect the electric cables!

The clocks have now change to GMT meaning that construction work by Lovell’s will be reduced due to the increasing lack of daylight.

Calendar notes: 1st November Sunrise 06:55am Sunset 4:33pm; 15th November Sunrise 07:19am Sunset 4:11pm; 30th November Sunrise 07:43am Sunset 3:55pm.

The night sky: November 2012

15 November 8pm Looking All sky

With the dark nights now upon on us, the starry sky remains dominated by the Great Square of Pegasus & the nearby constellation of Andromeda. Look out for M31 (Mag +3.4) the great galaxy in Andromeda which is easily visible in a pair of 10 x 50 binoculars, as is M33 (Mag + 5.7) in the star pattern of Triangulum.

Also, the Milky Way is at its best arching high over-head from east to west with its numerous star clusters & nebulae, while the Winter constellations are rising in the east: Orion (The Hunter), Gemini (The twins), Taurus (The bull) and Aurigae (The Charioteer). This means that the beautiful star cluster of the Pleiades M45, (The seven sisters) is reasonably high up in the eastern sky, which is always a lovely sight in binoculars.

Look out for the ‘W’ of the constellation Cassiopeia high over-head, which lies in a dense part of the Milky Way; and the Plough asterism (Ursa Major) lying almost on its back close to the northern horizon.

The brilliant planet Venus is visible in the south-eastern sky before dawn 2 ½ hours before sunrise, and lies in the constellation of Virgo. It remains a brilliant morning star throughout November shining at magnitude -3.9. By the end of November Venus rises around 2 hours before the sun, and remains a splendid sight. On the morning of November 27th the ringed planet Saturn will be only 0.6 degrees north of Venus as it reappears in the dawn sky.

The giant planet Jupiter lies in the constellation of Taurus (The bull), and is visible throughout the night in the south-eastern sky just after sunset. Jupiter looks like a bright yellow ‘star’ of magnitude -2.8. Binoculars will show the planet’s four major moons: Io, Europa, Ganymede & Callisto, as they move around the planet in their daily journey. A telescope will begin to show the planet’s horizontal cloud belts

The Blue Bell Hill Community centre ‘rocked’ on Friday evening when they held their annual Halloween Party. Children from all over the estate, and St Ann’s, joined in the fun by dressing up as their favourite spooky character. The evening was seen to be a big success …showing that the ‘community spirit’ was very much alive in our neighbourhood.

Are housing development managers playing Scrooge this Christmas?

DSCN2024

While pre planning to take photographs all around the estate at the weekend, I visited Flewitt Gardens today and walked down the footpath between the two rows of houses, and it seemed rather odd. The external wall cladding was looking good, it was going on a treat. It was the external works which was the problem. All of the houses facing the newly built homes along the south side of Flewitt Gardens were having 1.8m fencing installed along one side of the footpath, while there was an obvious gap along the other side, adjacent five properties.

It seems such a shame that Mark Lowe & Derrick Roberts at the City Council, could not make some funds available just to fence these 5 back yards, and help reduce crime & antisocial behaviour in the area.

The new Robin Hood Chase

Master plan 2

Zone 3

Zones

This is the proposed master plan for the Robin Hood Chase as published autumn 2011.

Zone 1: Joint Service Centre (4250 square meters gross) and associated 60 space car park.

Zone 2a: At present this area is occupied by the closed St Ann’s Health centre, car park area and retail units with maisonettes above the shops.

This will become a mixed use retail and commercial area with associated parking. The development is seeking to establish the principle of 835 square meters of retail space, a 400 square meter restaurant space, and 475 square meter office. This retail/commercial zone would be located in the south west corner of the site adjacent to The Robin Hood Chase green corridor. No layout plans have been submitted for this zone.

Zone 2b: The retained Chase Neighbourhood Centre and new parking area in the central area of the site.

Zone 3: Residential use – The development is seeking to establish the principle of developing the northern part of the site for between 12-18 family houses. No layout plans have been submitted for this zone. Access to these new social houses would be by Aster Road vie Hunger hill Road.

Video update: The Robin Hood Chase

This is the first in a serious of videos following the regeneration of the Robin Hood Chase shopping precinct in St Ann’s, which begins with an aerial view of Locksley house, health centre and the lower two commercial units.

Following an extensive slum clearance program of old St Ann’s beginning in 1973 the modern day estate was built in 11 phases by George Wimpey's, and the Robin Hood Chase was completed in 1975. It consists of Locksley House at the bottom of the Chase in the south eastern corner, the Well Spring Health Centre opposite, the Chase public house (since demolished), and the four shop units adjacent what is today Livingstone Street.

This video shows Locksley House, along with  Zone 2A ; the health centre and the first block of shops with the maisonettes along the upper level. Part of  Zone 2B  is also shown which will become a ‘community area’ and car park with 42 spaces (3 for disabled).

The unit which was formerly the St Ann’s Housing Office once belonged to the Nat West bank. In the latter half of the 1980s there was a very daring and well planned bank robbery in which £1m was stolen. Despite extensive Police enquiries the culprits have never been caught.

The inhabitants of Locksley House are now being re-housed and the block will be demolished early in 2013, and the residents in the maisonettes above the shops will be moving out from this December to allow the blocks to be demolished next summer.

Video: Cladding update day 87

With 71 days to completion, progress on the external wall cladding is progressing well.

No one I have spoken to likes the horizontal grey boards on the properties in Ferrers Walk & Paxton Gardens adjacent Stonebridge City Farm. They point out that this finish is nothing like the art illustrations of the properties they were shown during consultations earlier in the year. They say that had they been shown this ‘cabin look’ cladding at the time of their one-to-one consultation, they would have promptly rejected it because it looks so ugly.

The video begins in Melville Gardens, and then Limmen Gardens, Pym Walk, Flewitt Gardens, Ferrers Walk, Dennett Close, Lytton Close, Eastham Close & Lytton Close again. We then look at Paxton Gardens, Stonebridge Road, and finally Paxton Gardens fronting Beacon Hill Rise Road.

The accompanying pop music is Russian, with the first track called Алсу - Я тебя не придумала.

Labour Party in 13% lead over Tories

Latest Poll ResultsConservative support has fallen to 30 per cent, a drop of five points in ten days and only one point ahead of the Tories’ lowest score since the 2010 Election.

Ed Miliband’s Labour has stretched its lead to 13 points on 43 per cent, with Nick Clegg’s Lib Dems scoring eight points, a humiliating four points behind the anti-EU UKIP Party, which has 12, according to a Mail on Sunday poll.

lord tebbitFormer Minister Lord Tebbit expressed his anger at todays’ news.

Writing in The Observer, Lord Tebbit - a cabinet minister in Margaret Thatcher's government - said: 'This dog of a coalition government has let itself be given a bad name and now anybody can beat it.

'It has let itself be called a government of unfeeling toffs. Past governments have had far more real Tory toffs: prime ministers Alec Douglas-Home and Harold Macmillan, or even in Thatcher's day, Whitelaw, Soames, Hailsham, Carrington, Gowrie, Joseph, Avon, Trenchard and plenty more, without incurring similar abuse.'

He added: 'The abiding sin of the government is not that some ministers are rich, but that it seems unable to manage its affairs competently.'

First Food bank set to open in St Ann’s

Food Bank

The former Laundrette on the Robin Hood Chase is being turned into a ‘Food bank’ which is set to open at the end of the month.

FOOD banks are opening across Nottingham because the number of people who cannot afford to feed their families is increasing.

Charities say the development shows the seriousness of the problem as unemployment and benefit changes mean residents struggle to make ends meet.

People must be referred to the food bank from a third party, like a Job Centre or Citizens Advice Bureaux, before being given a voucher entitling them to three days' worth of food.

A food bank is an organization that receives food donations to be distributed to those in need. You might be wondering……who provides the donations? A majority of food donations are made by food manufacturers, processors, grocery chains and other food suppliers. Companies and organizations, as well as members of the community, also play a key role by making generous monetary and food donations. Companies will often host food drives as a way to collect donations.

As donations come in, food banks work to ensure that food provided to customers is always edible and within the expiration date. Food banks work to safely provide for customers in the best means possible. Food banks can be found in most communities, and rely on the generosity of donors and volunteers to carry out day-to-day operations. Food banks often host major fundraising efforts, such as walks and other events, to bring in financial resources. All food banks serve one purpose: to help those in need.

Changes to Mental Health services ‘yet to be approved’

qmc_large

Nottinghamshire Healthcare can confirm that Ward B50 at the Queen’s Medical Centre, a 20 bedded mental health ward for older people, will be relocated to Highbury Hospital in Bulwell. There will be no reduction in the number of beds provided or any job losses as a result of this move. This decision was taken last year.

The ward will be relocated to a fully refurbished ward at Highbury Hospital, providing modern and fit for purpose facilities, with significant improvements in the care environment. There have been no ward closures at Highbury Hospital to enable this relocation to take place.

The decision was made following a review of current provision, bed locations and patient needs. Highbury Hospital is our main location for mental health services in the City and therefore it makes clinical sense for our older people’s services to be based on this site.

With regards to Ward A23, the Trust’s remaining mental health ward for older people at the Queen’s Medical Centre, a decision is yet to be made regarding its future. The Trust will ensure patients and staff are consulted and kept informed of any options being considered. Decisions will be taken based on a county wide review of older people’s beds and following the launch of the National Dementia Strategy.

Services in Mansfield and Ashfield have been subject to a formal three month consultation, which has yet to go before the County PCT Cluster Board. A decision will then be taken. Daybrook and  Bestwood remain as they are.

Major service change does not need to be approved by the CQC – rather it is the Joint Health Scrutiny Committee, who considers substantial changes and whether people have been consulted with properly.

The Trust is committed to providing the highest standards of care to meet patients’ needs.

Video update: 15th October ~ ‘Go Compare’

Exactly one year ago we were reporting that the first house had been completed by construction firm Lovell Partnerships Ltd; this is the house at the top of Magson Close Marked by the street name plate of Blake Close. Today all of the new houses are occupied with families, and new residents are moving into the new apartment blocks in Dennett Close & Magson Close.

The top video shows how our estate looked on 15th October 2011, while the bottom one shows how the Stonebridge Park Estate looks today. The recent video also shows the external improvement works being put in place by WATES, which are the new perimeter iron railings and wooden fences.

15 October 2011
15 October 2012

The weather on both occasions was remarkably similar, the trees were beginning to change colour and leafs were falling to the ground.

There is more work to do with the roads and pavements in the construction areas, while new street lighting is still being installed, and connected to the electricity supply. The first phase of our £11m Regeneration Scheme is nearing completion which should be on the 17th December, the anniversary of the turf cutting ceremony which took place in 2010
