Wrights & Dobson’s was a lace finishing factory located off Stonebridge Road, which has been here for many years. It was operational right up to 2000, when there was a serious fire in the ventilation system on the roof. Following the fire work continued, however, the work area continued to fill with fumes affecting the workers. The factory then closed down. It was hoped that the main building fronting Carlton Road could be re-used for something else, however, there was a break-in and vandals set fire to the interior causing major damage to it and the electrical installation there. This caused a major power cut to the Stonebridge Park Estate lasting a number of hours.
I am not certain of the year when Wrights & Dobson’s was demolished.
While new plans for this site, and the nearby Coop, were on display in Carlton Road library in the Winter of 2010, they do not appear on the planning application section of Nottingham City Council’s web site. However, I have been informed by local Councillor David Liversidge that a major supermarket chain is interested in developing the whole site (they do not include Tesco's). A planning competition is now underway between architects, and the best plans will be chosen at a later date. Councillor Liversidge says they include social housing on the site of the Coop store.
